Why Marching

I love Marching, we make alot of friends and I enjoy showing people how cool marching is and meeting new people as they join. I have marched since I was 7 and my Mum was a marcher too. Marching is a great way to get fit and have fun and travel

Hi my name is Tracy McDonald and I coach Hokonui U18 along with Renee Morgan. I have always had marching in my veins, I was a marcher a way back and took a break and then once I had my family, my friend Toni Grumball mentioned to me she wanted to take her daughter to Invercargill to have a go at marching, I said to Toni why don’t we try set up our own marching team as my daughter would march too, we achieved this and have continued to build the name of Hokonui. Toni stayed on with Hokonui U12 for a couple more years then retired, and I started Hokonui U16 and asked my good friend Renee Morgan if she would co-coach with me to which she agreed, going from strength to strength throughout the years. I coached Hokonui U12, Hokonui U16 and now known as Hokonui U18. I love marching as it is a passion of mine and I love what the sport offers to the girls. I love watching the girls grow personally and marching wise and making amazing friendships along the way. As a coach I never dreamed we would create a NZ champion team let along do it back to back.

Although I never marched myself my daughter did and that’s how I got involved by supporting her and her team. Since then I have held many roles from team manager/chaperone to committee level and have enjoyed the many friendships that I have made. It’s these friendships that keep me coming back. I enjoy volunteering and being involved with our marching community as it’s very rewarding and it’s great seeing the teams reach their goals.
